Goals

  • RESEARCHDevelopment of methodologies for assessment and sub-seasonal to decadal predictions of impacts of climate variability and changes on water security, food security, vector-borne diseases such as malaria, economy, and society at 10 kms. and smaller scales; leading to experimental predictions of societal impacts of climate variability and changes in four to five years.

    Assessment, and multi-day predictability and prediction studies of rainfall events, especially in urban areas and river basins, at 1-10 kms scales, leading to experimental prediction in two to three years.

    Development of state-of-the-art, regional and global Earth System modeling and downscaling capability for simulation and prediction at 1-10 kms scales.

    Assessment and subseasonal-to-decadal predictability and prediction studies of socio-economic impacts of climate variability and changes, including global warming; using socio-economic data and models.

    Understanding applicability of climate scientists’ research in addressing climate-related societal issues; by organizing workshops and “listening sessions” with farmers and extension workers, water managers, public health officials, and social workers.

    Participation in national and international climate research and applications, and Earth observation programs.

    Development of techniques and technologies for Earth System observation.

  • EDUCATIONEducation and training programs for high-school to post-graduate college teachers on Earth System Science (ESS) and societal impacts, modeled on the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune.

    Ph.D. program for education and research in ESS and societal impacts.

    Education and training programs for public and private sector officials on societal impacts of climate variability and climate changes.
